Winter picture books I love

Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson... This is a fun hibernation story. Simple, rhyming, and full of bright illustrations of fun forest critters. 

Big Snow by Jonathan Beam... Also simple and ideal for maybe 4-7, but one that captivated my littles. 

The Big Snow by Berta and Elmer Hader... This is a much longer picture book which I actually shelved in our 4th grade reading level shelf to enjoy as a short read. Big fan of woods books and this is no exception. 

Goodbye Autumn, Hello Winter by Kenard Pak... All of these seasonal books are fun but my favorite season is winter and second favorite is autumn so this is my very favorite! 

Katy and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton... There's something very delightful about an old classic and Virginia Lee Burton hits the mark! Especially fun for the little ones who love trucks, snowplows, and construction equipment. 

Ladybug Girl and the Big Snow... A lot of picture book series are kind of meh to me but I happen to really like Ladybug Girl and so do my kiddos! This one, specifically, is my favorite. I just love the snow descriptions and I remember being a kid playing in the snow and feeling just how Lulu does! 

Let it Snow... Short, simple, sweet, and perfect for the 2-5 year old crowd.  

The Mitten by Jan Brett... Truthfully, around half of Jan Brett's books could go on this list but The Mitten seems to deserve a specific shoutout. The story is fun but the illustrations are so captivating! 

Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner... This is part of a series that looks over-and-under all sorts of things (ponds, canyons, etc) and we all liked it. 

Secrets of Winter... I am not always in the mood for these flashlight books but they are a big hit with the kids! 

Sleep Tight Farm... This book, about tucking in a farm for the winter, taught me some homesteading tricks and just generally enchanted us!

Snow by Cynthia Rylant... This one paints the best picture of snowy winter magic- one of my favorites! I love snow and I love this short and simple yet magical book.

The Snow Dancer by Addie Boswell... Another favorite, this one is about a young lady loving the pristine nature of a fresh snow and then having all kinds of fun. It reminds me of my own childhood adoration for that fresh snow and feels special to me for that reason. 

Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin... This is a longer, biographical picture book that teaches us about the first person to really study snowflakes. Such a fun, cool winter read! 

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats... This is a delightful classic with such a cool history behind it, but also a simple and sweet read even your littlest readers can enjoy. 

The Snowy Nap by Jan Brett...Again, about half of Jan Brett's books could easily go on this list but this one seems to deserve a specific shoutout. Her illustrations are just wonderful! 

Winter Days in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder... We are big Little House fans and all of us love this cozy adaptation with its sweet Garth Williams-inspired illustrations.
